Mexico: Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries exceed exports of beer and tequila

The exported value of blueberries would reach close to USD 1.400 million, 12% more than in the 2021-22 campaign (US$1.242 million), estimated the Scotiabank Department of Economic Studies.

Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries exceed exports of beer and tequila Regularly the agri-food exports from Mexico are headed by the beer and tequila, that's how they ended last year, but in January 2023 berries or red fruits beat alcoholic beverages, according to the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) and Agricultural Market Consulting Group (GCMA).

"Berries are the first product sold abroad...in second place is beer and...tequila is in third position," explained GCMA.

In the first month of the year, berry exports —strawberry, raspberries and blueberries fresh or frozen, among others— totaled 374 million dollars, which meant an increase compared to the same month last year.

While foreign sales of beer decreased by representing 348 million dollars, against 382 million dollars in January 2022. In the case of tequila, exports totaled 292 million dollars in January 2023.

Sales to other countries tomato amounted to 265 million dollars, so this vegetable was in fourth place in exports in January 2023, according to GCMA.

While the exports of avocado fell to fifth place, despite the fact that exports increased due to the Super Bowl of the NFL, by lowering sales from 339 million dollars in January 2022 to 254 million dollars in the same month of 2023.

In sixth place in exports is cattle and meat with 227 million dollars in the first month of 2023.

According to Banxico and GCMA, in January 2023, exports from the agri-food sector totaled 3 million dollars, a growth of 893% compared to last year. While imports grew 8.27%, adding 25.5 thousand 3 million dollars, which leaves a surplus of 624 million dollars.
