Large-scale berries: world's first indoor vertical berry farm opens

Plenty, an American agricultural technology company, has opened the world's first large-scale indoor vertical berry farm, exclusively introducing Driscoll's strawberries from the world leader in premium berries.

Designed to produce over 4 million pounds of strawberries per year using a 914-foot vertical indoor farm, Plenty Richmond will allow for a constant supply of nutrients, superior airflow, and intensive lighting, allowing it to support a wide range of crops, including strawberries.

“Plenty Farm will boost local agricultural production and drive economic development while diversifying against risks and protecting the environment,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin.

Plenty also applied proprietary software and artificial intelligence to monitor ideal temperature, light and humidity in its grow rooms, optimizing peak seasonal texture, size and flavor while utilizing a patent-pending method for more effective pollination.

“This farm is a model of the positive impact that climate-agnostic agriculture can have and proof that vertical farming can deliver the crop diversity and scaled, local production needed to ensure the future of the global food system,” said Arama Kukutai, CEO of Plenty.

The first strawberries from the farm will be available early next year.
