India will reduce tariffs on blueberries and various US agricultural products

North American Blueberry Council (NABC) President Kasey Cronquist said, “Reducing tariffs on U.S. blueberries will put American growers on a more level playing field with our competitors.”

India is taking new steps to reduce tariffs on a variety of American products. The action comes as a resolution to several disputes at the World Trade Organization.

US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said in a press release that the resolution is an important milestone in fostering better trade relations between India and the US. “Additional tariffs on blueberries and fresh, frozen, dried and processed cranberries. The move follows the reduction of tariffs on almonds, walnuts and other American agricultural products that went into effect last week,” she added.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack commented that under the Biden-Harris Administration, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the United States Trade Representative (USTR) have focused on restoring trust and strengthening relations with global trading partners, including India, and working through the World Trade Organization and elsewhere to ensure that those partners meet their obligations so that U.S. agriculture has full and fair access to major export markets. .

The announcement came as President Joe Biden met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi ahead of the G20 Leaders Summit. Other tariffs on frozen turkey and duck will also be reduced. This latest measure will reportedly expand economic opportunities for American producers. The National Turkey Federation, the North American Blueberry Council (NABC) and the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council expressed their enthusiasm for India's decision to reduce tariffs.

“The U.S. has long faced a 30% tariff on India, which has resulted in declining market share for U.S. blueberries versus countries that have enjoyed free trade and reduced tariffs with India. Reducing tariffs on U.S. blueberries will put American growers on a more level playing field with our competitors,” said NABC President Kasey Cronquist.

The executive concluded: “Our producers and marketers have fostered a special connection with their Indian customers and we are excited to see these connections strengthened going forward with the new reduced tariffs.”
