INIA highlights the importance of biological control in berries

In Osorno specialists discussed technology that encourages sustainable agriculture by minimizing the use of chemical productss.

With the purpose of transferring knowledge to the productive sector on the importance of biological control in plagues that affect the orchards of berries of the area, the Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) held a seminar where specialists called on farmers to reduce the use of pesticides in crops.

"Currently the country needs to reduce the use of chemical products in general, it is a national theme to reduce the use of pesticides, emphasizing the importance of clean agriculture, therefore we believe that this technology is an important contribution for the productive sector", Explained Enrique Stange, National Head of Production and Marketing of Technological Supplies of INIA.

Specialists from the regional research centers INIA Quilamapu (Chillán) and INIA La Cruz (Quillota) spoke with the attendees about entomopatogenic fungi, which constitute an alternative to solve the problems posed by insects native to and introduced to the country for the field of berries , understanding that biological control is based on the use of a natural enemy, be it an insect, bacteria, virus or fungus, which keeps any plague under control, also having the advantage of being a harmless treatment for the human being at the time of the application to the garden.
