Investigating the use of insects to treat waste from the fruit and vegetable industry

The Lugo laboratory AMSlab, specialized in the quality control of different sectors, and Grupo Iñesta, based in Alicante and dedicated to the manufacture of organic fertilizers and fertilizers for the care of crops.

Insect treatment

They are behind a research project for the use of insects in the treatment of waste from the fruit and vegetable industry for reuse "as agricultural inputs."

"Bioentonomy: New bioeconomy strategies through insect biotechnology" is a project "of agroindustrial research and experimental development based on obtaining new solutions for the agricultural sector", through the use of insects "for the use of waste of the agri-food industry ”, explain its promoters.

Making good use of waste

The objective of this research process "focuses on the use of waste from the fruit and vegetable industry" through "biotechnology" strategies. to obtain "new products with potential for use as agricultural inputs."

"The use of insects will increase the added value of the by-products to be valorized, giving rise to a source of proteins and lipids, mainly, of great interest to the agricultural industry," explain the companies participating in the project.

We are looking for "bioactive extracts based on lipids and amino acids" with "agronomic potential to be included at least in a final marketable formulation".

In this way, the researchers work in a sustainable and environmentally friendly process for an alternative production to the synthesis processes.

"In this sense, it is intended to break with the conventional production model and move towards a more sustainable agriculture, minimizing its environmental impact and maximizing the use of resources", given that "as a final result, the improvement of certain products destined for the agricultural sector would be obtained through the use of beneficial compounds, obtained from insects that feed on the residues of the agri-food industry".

This project is framed within the call for R&D Projects, subsidized by the CDTI, supported by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and co-financed with Structural Funds of the European Union (ERDF) within the Smart Growth Operational Program 2014-2020.
