China on the horizon

At FruitCare 2020 the topic of growth opportunities for the Chilean fruit industry in China was also addressed. In this area, the Chilean Ambassador to China, Luis Schmidt, highlighted the recovery of the Asian giant after the coronavirus outbreak in the first weeks of this year. "Our country's exports to the world in the third quarter have fallen almost 9,8%, except for China, where they have risen 9,3%, so there are many opportunities," said Schmidt.

Ambassador Luis Schmidt not only highlighted opportunities for species whose incomes have been recently approved in China, such as pears and citrus, but also spoke of other markets. “Just think that in China, India and Indonesia alone we have 42% of the world's population, which represents a huge opportunity for our agricultural products. Barriers are running out, China is four times the size of the United States in e-commerce, and the phenomenon is enhanced with the arrival of 5G. Everything related to that is going to be very important in future commercial relations, and we must accelerate such processes in Chile, ”he stressed.
