La Antigua Guatemala: Producers and exporters of Chilean blueberries present in Agritrade 2015

In Santo Domingo El Cerro, Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, on March 12 and 13 Agritrade was held, the most important international agricultural fair in Central America and the Caribbean. The event brought together more than 170 exhibitors from different companies and nationalities, highlighting for the first time the presence of countries such as Russia, Poland and Sri Lanka, interacting with businessmen from the United States, Spain and the Netherlands, along with representatives of the all countries that make up Central America and the Caribbean.

This international fair is held for the seventeenth time, always in the perspective of looking for new goals and new objectives that allow the necessary leap to become a reference worldwide.

Guatemala is a country with abundant and diverse natural resources, with a remarkable agricultural potential that has allowed in the 2014 to export to the Central American market US $ 177 million, which represents an 13.8% more than the previous year, maintaining this tendency to exponential growth .

Agritrade is an opportunity to interact with other actors in the region and from different parts of the world, and carry out transactions that are an opportunity for Guatemalan farmers to access international markets, generating new jobs and improving the population's standard of living. .

Among the novelties of mini colored carrots, frozen avocado, chocolate, pineapple, Chinese peas, blackberries, lemons, flowers, phytosanitary products, handicrafts, seeds and a set of 166 agroindustrial goods, stood the Exportadora Norte Blue stand, representing the producers of Chilean blueberries, who traveled with the support of Pro Chile.

The representation of the Chilean producers of blueberries caused a lot of interest from the other participants, due to the healthy characteristics of the fruit; for technology and applied research; for the long experience in the handling of the crop, and for the curiosity of being a Chilean product presented at a Central American fair.

reportajes_19032015_2With this participation, Chilean producers not only achieved new export opportunities for their blueberries, but also important knowledge and experience transfer agreements, both for Central America and for Europe.

The soil richness of Guatemala and the conditions to develop the agri-food and agro-fruit industry in the region are very advantageous. This is why the attending experts are committed to strengthen the production and commercialization of the sector through the diversification of markets and products, implement phytosanitary development systems and technology transfer; identify new products, generate employment and exportable supply, and reach the competitiveness of the agricultural sector within the framework of globalization.

The meeting is organized by the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport) and was inaugurated by the President of Guatemala, Otto Pérez Molina, who made a long tour of all the booths learning about each commercial or technological offer that was presented at the fair.

The president of the Organizing Committee, Rodolfo Rivera, assured that transactions close to US $ 100 million were developed in the event, which means a total success of the fair.
