The Spanish berry campaign stabilizes

The report of the Observatory of Prices and Markets of the Junta de Andalucía dedicated to the production of red fruits for week 19 of 2020 (from Monday 4 to Monday 11 May), indicates that raspberries and blueberries are in the period of maximum production. Likewise, he stressed that "the campaign has stabilized", since the volume of strawberries and raspberries sold "has been maintained compared to the previous week".

Strawberry

As detailed in the report, it is estimated that the average field price of strawberries has reached 1,04 euros/kg. It should be remembered that "the strawberry campaign was surprised by the coronavirus crisis at the peak of production, therefore, given the marked drop in consumption produced, the sector was forced to send strawberries to the industry prematurely, to withdraw fruit and reduce surface area of cultivation”, they explain from the Board.

"In a normal campaign, and always according to the average of the last 5 campaigns, by week 19, 94,5% of the total expected production of strawberries for fresh consumption should have been marketed," he pointed out. Although, "due to the crisis and the losses that occurred during the campaign", the Observatory has estimated that "up to now 22% less has been sold than expected".

Raspberry

Currently, the campaign is in the period of maximum production. By week 19, 80,5% of what is expected to be produced throughout the campaign has been collected, he explained.

In addition, the Observatory has stressed that "in a campaign marked by falling prices perceived by the farmer, the state of alarm added uncertainty to the markets, placing raspberry prices below the average since it began the crisis". In the last week for which prices are available, the price has been at €5,38/kg.

Blueberry

Regarding blueberries, the Board has indicated that it is also in the "full production" phase. At the same time, it has indicated that in the last two weeks the volume traded has been reactivated.

In this sense, he stressed that "prices have been low this season for reasons external to the coronavirus crisis (due to the large supply from different countries). However, in the last three weeks (from April 20 to May 10) they have stopped falling after a continued decline that began in February.

The last price available, for week 19, is € 3,54 / kg, higher than the price of the two previous campaigns for the same week.
