“The blueberry industry is gaining tremendous importance in recent years”

Ramón Achurra projected the berry industry and pointed out that Chilean cranberry shipments can reach 545 millions of FOB dollars this year, surpassing exports of apples, whose volume would be the lowest since the 2002.

The president of Fedefruta, Ramón Achurra, said that, according to estimates by his trade association, the value of fresh cranberry exports will reach 2016 US $ 545 FOB, surpassing both apples and cherries, and standing at second place of the species that would register higher income this year, because if Fedefruta's projections are met, the Chilean export of fresh blueberries will become the highest in FOB returns after the table grape.

This was declared by the president of Fedefruta at the 2a Hortifrut Technology and Innovation Fair, an event focused on the berries and blueberries industry that has just ended at Espacio Riesco.

Although this is due to the decrease in the export volumes of the apples, which this year register their lowest shipments from 2002, the blueberries should note an increase of at least 6% in their values, with respect to the 2015.

"The industry of berries and blueberries is gaining tremendous importance in recent years"Commented Achurra. Thus, based on calculations from the private sector, he said that at present "we are above the 30 thousand hectares planted with these products, which, although equivalent to only 10% of the fruit area in Chile, represents the 17% of the value of our fruit exports“, he pointed out at the event organized by Hortifrut.
