La Libertad leads exports of blueberries with 86% stake

La Libertad is the region that leads the Peruvian exports of blueberries to September of the 2016 with 80.2 million dollars and with the 86 percent of participation, reported Sierra and Selva Exportadora of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri).

After La Libertad, according to Customs figures, there are the regions of Lima (US $ 10.3 million), Ancash (US $ 1.8 million), Ica (US $ 813,000), Lambayeque (US $ 165,000) and Piura (US). $ 149,000).

Cranberries from these regions came to 23 countries, and the United States was the main buyer country of the so-called Blueberry with US $ 57.8 million, followed by the Netherlands (US $ 17.4 million), United Kingdom (US $ 11,1 million), Hong Kong (US $ 2,2 million) and Canada (US $ 1,5 million).

Job opportunities

Sierra y Selva Exportadora said that the entry of blueberries to China, whose first shipment was made last November 21, opens a window of opportunity to small producers who bet on the cultivation of blueberries, as they will orient their product to that new market.

He explained that from the 2011 through the Peru Berries National Program of this entity, technical assistance has been provided to producers in Cajamarca, Lima, Lambayeque, Cusco, Arequipa, Huánuco and Ancash for the improvement of cranberry quality.

Through the program, advice is provided on the implementation of Good Agricultural and Commercial Practices, the importance of genetic resources and nurseries, knowledge on pests and diseases, field management, post harvest, marketing and foreign trade; so that they can compete in the market with all the necessary standards.

It is worth considering that although in Peru cranberry can be produced all year round, production for export starts between the months of September and November, a period in which Chile and Argentina have not yet begun production and where the United States and Europe end your harvest
