Most of Spain's imports come from third countries

Morocco and Peru led the way in 2024, with 66 percent of Spain's fresh produce imports coming from countries outside the EU

Around 66 percent of Spanish imports of fresh fruit and vegetables came from third countries during the period January-October 2024.

According to data from the Customs and Excise Department, processed by Fepex, the value of imports from non-EU countries during the period was just under 2.700 billion euros, 12 percent more than in the same period of the previous year.

Fresh produce from the EU accounted for 34 percent of imports, worth €1.390 billion, up 13 percent from the same period in 2023.

Morocco was Spain's leading supplier in January-October 2024 with 801 million euros, representing a growth of 13 percent.

Peru followed with 501 million euros (up 22%), while France came third with 426 million euros (up 22%).

Portugal was the fourth largest supplier of fruit and vegetables with a value of 350 million euros and a year-on-year growth of 19 percent, while the Netherlands ranked fifth, with its supply falling by 3 percent to 205 million euros.

In terms of volume, Spanish imports of fruit and vegetables from non-EU countries amounted to 1,8 million tonnes, while those from the EU amounted to 1,7 million tonnes.

Total imports of 3,5 million tonnes between January and October 2024 represented an increase of 7 percent over the same period in 2023.
