Now that the North American blueberry season is over, solid volumes are coming from South America and Mexico.

"We are receiving supplies from Argentina and Peru and something from Mexicoconfirms Randy Wilson of King Fresh Produce LLC, based in Dinuba, California. “We expect higher volumes from Peru and Chile; In general, the volume is increasing. In both Argentina and Peru, it has increased around an 20%".

The sector is witnessing a greater push from Peru this year in terms of berries, in addition to other products. “Peru is changing its dynamicssays Jerald Downs of Hollister, California-based Berry People LLC. She points out that, normally, in December the demand for berries increases due to the general increase in demand for products in the holiday season. Generally, it coincides in time with the last days of the Argentine season, while the Chilean season has not yet reached its full potential. “But now it seems that this growth in demand is offset by the increase in Peru's supplyDowns added.

The demand increases

Domestic demand for blueberries looks strong and that pushes prices up slightly from last year. “Prices range from $20-24 FOB to a maximum of $30 FOB,” says Wilson. “Maybe a little older than last year. In Peru and Argentina it has been raining a bit and it is possible that this has delayed some shipments".

As for the future, Wilson anticipates that blueberries will continue to grow in both demand and supply as Thanksgiving and the holiday season approach. “I think the market will remain unchanged or it will go down a bit in the next two weeks"He concludes.
