Mexican berry production and exports recover after two bad years

«Mexico is a leader in the export of strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. Production remains on the rise and is expected to exceed the amount obtained in 2023, which was 3,937 billion dollars. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicted that the production of berries from Mexico in 2024 would be 81,000 tons, an increase of 8% compared to 2023," said the director of the National Association of Berry Exporters (Aneberries), Juan José Flores.

And after two years of falling exports due to various factors, this year the production and dispatch of berries Mexicans will recover.

«The past two seasons were terrible because the currency did not help, because prices did not help, because the environmental challenges are very complicated... The increases were going very well; until 2021-2022 we were talking about increases, from 2022-2023 and 2023-2024, we are talking about 17% less exports still due to factors to be analyzed, the currency, the slowdown due to macroeconomic issues,» Flores García stressed.

Despite the adverse factors, he added, the 63,000 hectares of berry crops in Mexico represent the generation of between 500,000 and 600,000 jobs.

"In my case, I have had a production record. My partner and I were born and raised here, and we have seen the growth in terms of jobs for our own people, for our own families. Ten years ago, there was little work for women and now there is a lot of employment, there is an economic spillover here," shared Manuel Arriaga, one of the raspberry producers who works with the licensed varieties of Berries Paradise.

Speaking to The Economist, the company's Supply Director, Alejandro Elizondo, shared that in the current season, they project a production of 8 million boxes of 2.04 kilograms of berries each.

In the states of Michoacán, Jalisco, Guanajuato and Sinaloa, where they have crops.

88% of this production is exported to the United States and 20 other countries in Europe, Asia and South America.

Berries Paradise works with 140 Mexican producers who contribute 50% of the company's production, the other 50% is produced by the agroindustrial company itself.
