Hydroponics technology takes over the blueberry industry

"One of the main problems is that most soils have a pH higher than ideal and this may be too high a value to adjust to ideal conditions"

Although the world is still in the midst of a global crisis, as a result of the pandemic, the signals from the markets are evident in terms of the growing demand for fresh and healthy food, among which the blueberry maintains a privileged position.

This growing demand for blueberries, which may increase once the world is out of this crisis, can only be satisfied by implementing hydroponic techniques in the management of crops, because it is the only alternative that allows successfully facing the precariousness of soils, the lack of of water and the climatic impossibility of cultivating in new regions. In this way, it can be ensured that the area devoted to blueberry cultivation grows according to demand and, on the other hand, that it produces rapidly to satisfy this demand.

Early production

“We know that blueberry production is a crop that consolidates in soil after the fifth year of production. In this scenario, in which world demand grows exponentially, hydroponics is emerging as the only cultivation system that advances this entry to the market from the first year of production, ”says Francisco López, director of Projar, a company specialized in hydroponics solutions. .

"A well developed root system is the basis of a successful cultivation ”

The subjective reasons that can explain the fact that plants produce earlier in hydroponic crops are due to the fact that the substrate is a more comfortable environment for the plant than the soil, and the time of planting occurs without stress due to the fact that the substrate is similar to the environment in which the plant was housed in the nursery. In addition, the roots in a container develop very strong and fast, which helps to advance the harvest.

In conventional management, the factors to be considered regarding the root system of the plant are multiplied, due to the physical and chemical characteristics that the soil can present and the delicacy of the crop. “To have healthy and quality plants, it is vitally important that the soil texture, the pH and the quality of the irrigation water are adequate. Most soils have a higher pH than ideal and may be too high to adjust to ideal conditions. A well-developed root system is the basis of a successful cultivation, ”concludes López.
