The European berry season is ending
The transition period to imports in the Belgian berry market is about to begin. «It is again the time of year when we still have many national and European products, but their quality has already begun to decrease. I estimate that we will receive 'berries' from outside Europe in the coming weeks," explains Gerrit de Vlieger, from Vrijders (Brussels, Belgium).
good prices
De Vlieger works at the Mabru wholesale market, where the level of activity is different every day. «Today was busier than yesterday. Of course, it also has to do with it being hotter. Raspberries sell well and cost between €1,50 and €1,60. Blackberries sell for between €1 and €1,20. Neither product suffers from excess supply, and that can be decisive. De Vlieger thinks it is surprising that red currants have not collapsed this year. “Other years, August has been a bit disappointing, but, this year, redcurrants have fought back and had good, stable prices. Blueberries have also enjoyed a good season. “The prices have been around €2 per 500 grams all the time, and now they are around €2,50.”
The blueberry season is ending
De Vlieger points out that September is usually a more difficult time for berries. «This month they tend to decline a little, since the new pome fruits are consumed again. Berries once again attract consumer interest in October and November, so it is clear that it is the turn of imported fruits; The European berry season is ending. This year we have also seen quite a few Polish fruits on the market, but luckily they have not harmed the market situation. "It is good that demand for these products is increasing, and now we are waiting for Peru and the rest of origins from outside the EU to arrive."
