The University of Florida (UF) announced its field day for this Tuesday, August 12, in the Virú area of La Libertad.
Licensed producers, invited companies, retailers, marketers, press, and advisors will be able to observe the progress achieved in the field by the varieties developed by the UF Blueberry Improvement Program, and participate in a panel test with blind tastings of UF varieties and selections.
A few years ago, UF began testing its varieties and selections in Peru in the fields of producers located in different parts of the country, sending a certain number of varieties and selections each year to testing networks located in the different blueberry production regions.
In total, more than 50 UF varieties and selections have been sent and tested to Peru. The commercially available varieties are: Albus, Colossus, Keecrisp, and Magnus, due to the good results they are achieving. After five years of testing in some cases, and with information gathered during monthly visits to the fields where these varieties are grown, as well as information provided by the producers themselves, it is known that: Albus stands out for being one of the earliest varieties on the market, its adaptability, and high jumbo fruit production; Colossus stands out for its hardiness, vigor, high jumbo fruit yield that is maintained throughout the season, and excellent postharvest characteristics; Magnus stands out for its fruit with good appearance, good size and flavor, and a plant that has shown very good yields; and Keecrisp for the crunchiness of its berries, high firmness, and good Brix/acidity ratio.
In addition, participants will have the opportunity to see and taste the fruit, for the first time, from the nueva variety FL19-006.
These varieties and some new selections that were sent in the last two years are already yielding very good results in Peru, and can be seen at this field day.
This field day will conclude in the evening with individual meetings with participating companies at a centrally located hotel in Trujillo.
