Berries are the third most exported agri-food product in Mexico

At the end of the year 2015 Mexico presented a surplus of 1.289 million dollars in the agri-food sector. Without a doubt, it was a historical result, since in 20 years these figures had not been reached. Why is this phenomenon? It is a consequence of the increase in exports, favored by policies, programs and actions that have enabled Mexico to substantially increase its agricultural productivity.

Some of the main exportable products in 2015 were the tomato (1.818 mdd) and the avocado (1.649 mdd), with an increase at the annual rate of 18,2%.

A clear example of this growth is the tomato (fresh or chilled) that increased an 22,7% referring to the same quarter of the year 2015. The main countries where this fruit is sold are the United States of America and Canada, with about 600 mdd. Worldwide, Mexico is one of the leading countries in the sale of this product, since its share is 21% globally.

In Mexico, there are more than 150.000 tomato producers located mainly in the following states: Sinaloa, Michoacán, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Baja California Sur and Jalisco.

Another fruit that has grown its sale very quickly are the calls "Berries" (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries), which in the first quarter of the year ranked third in national agrifood exports; just below the avocado and tomato. The state of Michoacán is the number 1 producer in Mexico of the calls "Berries".

Mexico has a large presence in international events around the world thanks to the Agency for Marketing and Development of Agricultural Markets (ACERCA) and PROMEXICO. Both agencies help promote and research international markets for the sale of Mexican agri-food products, through strategies aimed at the global economy.

In the first quarter of this year agrifood exports reached 6,6% in annual terms, to be located in 7.558 mdd. What gave an unprecedented result to exceed the 1.596 mdd and a global presence in 150 destinations through its agri-food products.
