Moroccan fruit and vegetable exports cross the million-ton threshold

Despite the current difficult world situation caused by the covid-19 pandemic, Morocco's fruit and vegetable exports crossed the threshold of millions of tons this season, increasing by 6% to 1,077,000 tons.

According to the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, this shows the good performance and resilience of local agribusinesses, which continues to expand and diversify its high quality and competitive production.

Moroccan red fruit sales in the foreign market increased by 25% to 82,500 tons. The same upward trend has been seen in the export of watermelon, which increased 61% to 104,400 tons, while that of avocado almost tripled to 32,800 tons.

However, citrus exports fell by 28% due to the drop in production. Exports of processed agricultural products from Morocco increased by 17% this season reaching 299 tons against 000 tons registered in the same period last year.

Morocco's agricultural sector contributes 19% to the national GDP and employs more than 4 million people, including around 100,000 in agribusiness. It plays a key role in the country's macroeconomic balances and makes a living with 80% of the 14 million inhabitants of rural areas, although it has suffered from low investment and low productivity.
