Chinese imports of fresh blueberries grow significantly

So far, 9 countries around the world have been exporting fresh blueberries to China. The total import volume has increased from 499 tonnes in 2012 to 22.045 tonnes in 2020, representing a 44-fold increase in 7 years.

Among these countries, Chile and Peru are the main exporters. Chile supplies the Chinese market from mid-December to March of the following year, while Peru supplies from September to December. Thanks to the unique climatic conditions in Peru, the harvest period in this country fills the gap in the global market, forming a unique product advantage.

Chinese imports of blueberries over the years

According to import data from China, only 1 tonne was imported from Peru in 2016, and we saw a sharp increase to 4.998 tonnes in 2017 and 11.919 tonnes in 2019. The main reason for this is that the months between September and December show a gap in China as Chile's supply period begins in mid-December, and Peru is the only supplier supplying during this period.

Rapid growth in imports indicates the enormous potential of China's blueberry market. China is becoming the center of the global blueberry market.
