The latest in the cherry industry will be discussed at the meeting on April 13

It will be a great opportunity for producers and participants in the cherry industry to face new issues related to the growth of the industry, the behavior of new varieties, opportunities in new markets and the most appropriate management to be more productive and obtain higher quality fruit.

The growth of the Chilean cherry industry has been sustained in the last 10 years, increasing its shipments to international markets from 68.544 tons in the 2013-2014 season, to 373.699 tons in the 2021-2022 campaign. , and now rising to 400 thousand tons of the current campaign, which means a growth of approximately 600%.

Climate and varieties

Production in Chile takes place in a wide production area, which extends from latitude 32º (Norte Chico) to latitude 46º (Patagonia), generating an offer from October to March, concentrating on the central zone of the country (regions of O'Higgins and del Maule) with large volumes of fruit from the second half of December to the first week of January.

Among the different producing areas there is a great diversity of microclimates, so knowing and studying the climate of each place becomes essential to design new cherry projects in the coming years, especially in a context of entry of new varieties to the production.

In addition to the entry of new and better varieties, it is necessary to design and sustain increasingly efficient production systems, orchards more suitable for harvest management, more efficient administration management and increasingly precise management in terms of nutrition, irrigation and other applications.

The appointment of April 13

To address these aspects of cultivation, the agronomist and specialist in cherry trees, Walter Masman, will give the talk: "Technical management for new varieties of cherry trees”.

For mainly cultural reasons, the cherry is recognized as a "premium" product in the Chinese market, mainly for its presence in the Chinese New Year celebrations, so one of the most important challenges for the industry is the extension and distribution of the offer beyond this holiday.

In this perspective, the agronomist and specialist in cherry trees, Víctor Vicencio, will present the topic: "Physiological considerations and key management to obtain high quality fruit in cherry trees”.

Overcoming the barrier of the Chinese New Year is a challenge to be addressed by the industry. In fact, the last containers of cherries in these last weeks of March have generated the same expectation among fruit receivers. This interest caused the prices of these latest late shipments to reach up to USD 139 per box in the wholesale market and over USD 145 in the retail or retail market.

In this area, the manager of ANA Chile, Lorena Pinto, will speak about "New varieties of cherry trees for early and late production".

The participation of these specialists in the meeting of the cherry of the April 13, which occurs in the context of XXV International Seminar on Blueberries & CherriesIt is a great opportunity for producers and participants in the cherry industry to face new issues related to the growth of the industry, the behavior of new varieties, opportunities in new markets and the most appropriate management to be more productive and obtain higher quality fruit.

There are around 50 national and international companies related to the industry that will participate in the meeting of the April 13 and a large attendance of producers, businessmen and new investors is expected at the event, which will take place in the Hotel Monticello Conference Center.
