Blueberries continue to impress scientists with their benefits
Blueberries continue to impress scientists with their health benefits for the whole body as evidenced by the profusion of blueberry studies presented at the 2015 Experimental Biology conference in Boston in April of this year. The research highlighted the emerging role of cranberry to help maintain blood sugar levels, a finding that could provide promising news for future risk management of diabetes.
Cranberries are naturally low in sugar, fat-free and with a good source of fiber, researchers at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University teamed up to determine whether cranberry consumption could improve blood sugar levels in adults with diabetes type 2.
The study divided participants into two groups: both ate a breakfast rich in fat. However, one group was given dehydrated blueberries with their breakfast, while the other was given the banana. Then a blood test was done that revealed the modest but remarkable beneficial effects on blood sugar between those who had eaten the blueberries with their breakfast and those who did not.
«These results are very promising. It is suggested that there may be a buffer effect for blood sugar when eating blueberries rich in polyphenols. Which means that simply adding a serving of cranberries to a meal can help protect against blood sugar picks that are related to damage to the inside of blood vessels«. Explained Dr. Arpita Basu of Oklahoma State University.
The results set the stage for future research, which can provide good news for the 29,1 million people in the US. who live with type 2 diabetes every year.
Among the common themes that arise from the other outstanding studies is that blueberries constitute a rich source of protective compounds called polyphenols that support the antioxidant enzymes of our body so that they are in better conditions to protect our body against inflammations and diseases, in effect , the strengthening of the proper body of the defense system.
«Collective research shows that when blueberries are consumed (either whole or liquid fruit) their protective compounds are absorbed and present in the body. This is an important finding as we continue to understand the protective role of blueberries and the many applications for the health of the whole body«. Said Dr. Christina Khoo, Director of Research Sciences, Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc.
The latest research revealed that the 25% less cell damage was experienced by human liver cells bathed in blueberry polyphenols for 20 hours, also that two glasses of cranberry extract consumed daily over time promote the activity of natural antioxidant enzymes of the body that fight free radicals that harm us. On the other hand, eight weeks of drinking low-calorie cranberry juice can help keep cysteine in plasma (an essential amino acid for digestive synthesis) an important component of our body's own defense, which can help keep our bodies balanced and working optimally.
These studies continue to show the benefits of blueberries in the body, as part of a healthy diet and a balanced lifestyle.
