Chile's blueberries have the potential to expand in all markets

Chilean blueberry producers begin a new season, and according to Andrés Armstrong, of the Committee of Cranberries of Chile, «The forecasts are good, although we had some rain at the beginning that caused delays. We hope to return to normal at the end of December. We are sending a Weekly Crop Report to our customers around the world in which we inform them about the course of the season and what to expect from it. "As much still depends on time, this allows us better planning.".

In terms of volume, it states that last year's exports reached 92.000 tons and current estimates suggest that almost 100.000 tons will be reached this year (an 6-8% more). The surface, of some 16.000 hectares, has not increased significantly, since "There has been more renewal of varieties than increase in surface area, because we are introducing new and better varieties every year," explains Armstrong. "The biggest problem is finding the necessary labor to harvest the crops, since there is still no adequate machinery for fruit intended for fresh consumption.".

North America, the main destination

In terms of markets, North America (USA and Canada) remains the largest recipient of Chilean blueberries. Armstrong says: "Last season, North America represented 67% of our total exports in terms of volume, while Asia represented 10% and Europe, 23%." In any case, “over the last six years, we have recorded very rapid growth in Asia; For now, there is a lot to do in China and Korea, and in Europe we are starting promotions in France for the first time ».

In terms of future growth, Armstrong believes that there is still sufficient potential in almost all markets. «Production in the US, the largest market in terms of consumption, is growing 10% a year. "In addition, countries that once did not know much about blueberries are now learning about their healthy properties.".

Overall, Chile is in an advantageous position in terms of climate and terrain, and Armstrong emphasizes that the country has much more to offer than just blueberries. “We have a wide range of products to offer our customers and we are also the largest player during the season in the southern hemisphere,” which should ensure a bright future for Chilean fruit exporters.
