Berries, the new Mexican delicacies

Mexico exported more than 1.000 million dollars of fresh berries to the world in 2015, which projects this group of fruits as one of the ones with the highest growth potential in the agricultural sector, reported Benjamin Grayeb, president of the National Agricultural Council (CNA) .

From January to November of the 2015, the last available official data, Mexico exported strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and fresh blackberries for 1.084 million dollars.

Mexico is practically the only external supplier of fresh strawberries in the US market, with a share of 99,6% of total imports from that country. It is also raspberries, blackberries and blackberries, with a portion of 26,9 percent.

"This is a thriving sub-sector and to which you can increase added value, with products that are processed, innovative and with design", commented Elena Acha Samra, Director of Promotion of Exports of ProMéxico.

The states of Michoacán, Baja California, Guanajuato, Jalisco and Puebla generate more than 110.000 jobs in the production of this set of fruits, which has maintained a steady growth for about 15 years.

As a consequence of the high national production, the Association of Producers, Marketers and Exporters of Berries (Aneberries) was created in 2010, with 15 exporting companies, which cultivate 5.000 hectares of berries in Michoacán, Jalisco, Baja California and Colima, with a worth 550 million dollars a year.

A remarkable case is the Valley of the Kings, in Michoacán, which had an agricultural vocation based on the cultivation of cane and the production of sugar; but three quinquennies were enough to provide 96% of the total production of blackberry in the country, with a value of almost 2.000 million pesos, according to the federal deputy José Antonio Salas.

In 2015, after bilateral agreements and sanitary approval, Mexico exported 6 tons of berries to China.
