The first two months of Brexit translate into less fruit and vegetables exported, but their value increases by 7%

The first two months of Brexit entry into force have resulted in a volume of Spanish exports of fruit and vegetables to the United Kingdom that has decreased by 7% compared to the same period in 2020, while the value of shipments has increased by 6 %.

Fruits and vegetables

Specifically, Spain sent to the United Kingdom in January and February 2021 a total of 302.190 tons of fruit and vegetables worth 427 million euros, compared to 404 million in the same period in 2020, according to data from the Customs Department processed by Fepex.

European agreements

In volume, Spanish exports to the United Kingdom in January and February were 302.190 tons, 7% less than in the same months last year.

Fepex positively valued the Agreement reached between the European Commission and the United Kingdom, which the European Parliament has ratified, since it was avoided that the Spanish export of fresh fruits and vegetables was taxed with 198 million euros in customs duties.

Brexit

However, in the short term, the departure of the United Kingdom from the EU has meant higher administrative costs for managing shipments and more documentary formalities, according to Fepex.

Thus, sources from the Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants detailed that, since January 1 of this year, exporting companies are processing the customs declaration (DUA) and the certificate of conformity with marketing standards.

May 1

With the approval by the European Parliament of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement reached by the European Union and the United Kingdom, the pact is ready to enter into force definitively on May 1, once the Council of the EU gives end the ratification process, according to the information notes of the European Parliament.
