Trials of new fruit packaging suggest blueberry season could last longer

The Polish Fresh Inset, a technology company focused on preserving the freshness of the harvest, has tested its characteristic Vidre+ product on blueberries in a trial to extend its shelf life in the package.

Test results conducted on blueberries after using innovative technology with a proprietary 1-MCP delivery system indicated a slower ripening effect. The treated blueberries maintained very good eating quality and firmness during the entire 49 days of the trial.

Vidre+™ technology is a patented system for 1-MCP to start releasing 1-2 hours after packaging and gradually release within the package itself over 30 hours via an easy-to-use sticker. Product release is caused by moisture within the packaged product. This state-of-the-art technology can now shield ethylene, a natural plant hormone and gas that plays an important role in both ripening and softening/decaying fruit. It is already used in Argentina and is awaiting regulatory approval in key food production markets, including the Americas.

The tests were commissioned by Fresh Inset and led by Dorota Wichrowska, Ph.D., from the Polish University of Science and Technology during the 2022 summer season. Results have demonstrated the impact of Vidre+™ technology on blueberries.

The treated fruits maintained an excellent food quality during the 35 days of the experiment and maintained a very good food quality during the entire 49 days of the trial. The untreated fruits began to soften at 21 days while the treated ones softened at 35 days. Likewise, the treated blueberries had 83% higher vitamin C and 33% higher antioxidant levels after 28 days.
