Red fruits occupy 12.000 hectares in Huelva

Strawberries continue to be the main berry crop in Andalusia, followed by blueberries and blackberries. The season now covers almost nine months

Global planting data for the 2019-20 Freshuelva campaign indicates a global increase of 2% and discrete increases in all species except blackberries.

Freshuelva figures on hectares planted based on data from associated companies at the end of last December total 11.700 hectares, 2% more than the 11.464 ha of the previous campaign.

Something similar happens by species, discrete increases in each of them.

Strawberry is still the main crop of berries in Andalusia. It occupies practically half of the surface and increases 2% over the previous year, reaching 6.217 ha (the previous campaign, 11.464 ha). The statistics of the Andalusian Board of January mention 6.775 ha of “strawberry and strawberry”, the only group considered in these data that are published monthly.

The blueberry remains stable, with a minimum increase. This year 3.089 hectares are declared, 30 ha more than the previous year, which they will not produce in this campaign.

The raspberry reaches 2.300 ha (the previous campaign had suffered a 3% decrease from the previous one, with 2.150 hectares planted).
The blackberries had descended the previous campaign and also do it in the current one; the 160 hectares are reduced to 145.

Freshuelva emphasizes that both for blueberry and raspberry that part of the increases in planted hectares occur in the area of the West Coast of Huelva.

Also that this campaign will be the first with its own raspberry variety, the result of the investigation of Strawberries New Materials. The species and varieties planted constitute a diversification with respect to the production of Huelva until a few years ago and at present their berries are present in the markets practically for 9 months.
