Morocco: the differentiating factor in the blueberry industry

The blueberry industry has presented a constant, very positive projection in terms of demand in a scenario in which the supply is also increasing, opening the way to new actors who are taking an increasingly leading role.

Latin America has been crowned many years ago as one of the strongest actors in the market of the blueberry industry, with countries such as Chile, Peru or Mexico who lead in the exports of this food.

A product that has undoubtedly been gaining strength and with it, a increasingly demanding consumer for a high quality fruit that meets its demanding worldwide standards. However, the outlook is quite favorable for the industry in general. While some countries have faced challenges due to extreme weather conditions, such as frost or droughts, the industry has faced a very beneficial overturn.

Countries like Morocco they have been standing out and gaining prominence in the industry due to their geographical position and climatic conditions. It has become an emerging focus supplying much of Europe, Asia, the Netherlands and Australia with its products. Although ten years ago it was not thought that this country could become a relevant player, today they are strongly linked to the cultivation of blueberries.

A strategic sector

Morocco has favorable weather conditions and at the same time a good availability of water resources and is open to investment. Moreover, they currently have the presence of multiple companies in the field that have gone to cultivate this fruit on Moroccan soil.

Amine Bennani, President of the Moroccan Association of Red Fruit Producers, he has been working since 2001 with red fruit producers as director of Phyto Loukkos. Loukkos, currently represents the 80% of national production of the berry sector in the country, with an estimated turnover of almost 400 million.
