Morocco tops the list of the largest exporters of fresh raspberries to the UK

Moroccan exporters have recently increased their raspberry exports to the UK market, EastFruit reports. Exports of fresh raspberries from Morocco to the United Kingdom have multiplied by 40 in the last three years and have reached 15.800 tons in the 2022/23 campaign (July-June). These volumes have brought Morocco revenues of USD 86 million and the status of main supplier of fresh raspberries to the British market.

Just a few years ago, Moroccan raspberries were available in the UK in trace amounts, and exports in the 2017/18 season were zero. However, the situation changed after the Proposed referendum on United Kingdom membership of the European Union. British importers actively searched for new alternative sellers, and Moroccan exporters were successful in filling that niche. By the way, the UK was the world's fifth largest importer of fresh raspberries in 2022.

Morocco has been increasing both its export volumes to the United Kingdom and its share in the British market. Morocco accounted for just 1,5% of total fresh raspberry imports into the UK just three years ago. In the 2022/23 campaign, this North African country managed to increase its quota to 55%.

As a result, Morocco has become the leading exporter of fresh raspberries to the UK, overtaking Spain, the previous leader. In addition, Spain has only reduced its exports to the United Kingdom, and its volumes have fallen by 40% in the last five seasons.

For Morocco, fresh raspberries are one of the most important export categories. Local growers continue to expand their raspberry planting areas, and as a result, Morocco has almost quintupled its fresh raspberry exports in the last six seasons. In the 2022/23 campaign, the country exported more than 60.000 tons of fresh raspberries.

As a result, Morocco has only improved its position in the world ranking of fresh raspberry exporters and became the world's third largest exporter in 2022. For comparison, in 2017, Morocco was only sixth.

Fresh raspberries are the third export category after tomatoes and mandarins in terms of export revenue, which amounted to $340 million in the 2022/23 season.

Morocco exports fresh raspberries mainly to European countries, with the UK showing the fastest growth rates. The UK was also the key importer of fresh raspberries from Morocco in the 2022/23 campaign with a 25% share of total Moroccan exports.
