Morocco has surpassed the US in blueberry exports to become the fourth largest exporter in the world!

In 2022, Morocco became the fourth largest exporter of fresh blueberries in the world, leaving behind even the United States, where blueberries were, in fact, grown, EastFruit reports.

In total, Moroccan exporters exported 53 tons of fresh blueberries last year, and only three countries managed to exceed this volume. These were Peru (000 tons), Chile (277 tons) and Spain (000 tons).

It should be noted that exports from the Netherlands in 11 months last year were higher than those from Morocco, having amounted to 104 tons. However, if we take into account the volume of re-exports, the actual result for the Netherlands will be much lower as it imported 000 tons of fresh blueberries during this period.

Blueberry exports from Canada and the United States were also higher than Moroccan ones, but only if we take into account the volume of berries on offer. Thus, of the 77 tons of Vaccinium blueberries exported from Canada, only 000 tons were cultivated blueberries. Meanwhile, exports of blueberries grown in the United States amounted to 18 tons in 800.

As well Morocco is catching up with Ukraine in exports of frozen raspberries, doubling the supply in 2022.

Recall that Morocco was the seventh largest exporter of cultivated blueberries in the world in 2017, losing to all the countries mentioned above and to Argentina. Morocco's annual blueberry exports were then 15 tons, that is, the country has multiplied them by more than three in the last five years!

The recipe for success in the Moroccan blueberry industry was similar to the one we described in our article on fresh strawberries. Initially, more than 90% of Moroccan exports went to Spain, which re-exported Moroccan blueberries, extending their sales season.

However, Spain's share of Moroccan exports has fallen to 36% between 2017 and 2022, and most exports now go directly to blueberry-consuming countries. The main destination for Moroccan blueberry sales are EU countries, as well as the United Kingdom and Norway.

In addition to the EU market, Morocco in recent years has opted for the opening of markets outside Europe. Thus, since 2017, the total export of fresh blueberries from Morocco to the countries of the Middle East and Southeast Asia has multiplied by 9,5, reaching 1.900 tons.

Until 2022, Russia was also an interesting destination for Moroccan blueberry exporters, but due to the invasion of Ukraine and subsequent sanctions and the economic downturn, Russia imported only 400 tons last year. For comparison, the annual exports in 2020-2021 from Morocco to the Russian market were 1-200 tons.

Among the most unexpected destinations for the export of Moroccan blueberries, one can point to trial deliveries of blueberries to the continent, which is considered the birthplace of blueberries, to North America. In 2022, Canada imported 100 tons of fresh blueberries from Morocco and 130 tons of Moroccan berries were supplied to the US market in 2021.
