Morocco: Berry exports are booming
Moroccan berry exports have increased by 21% during the 2015/2016 season, and have reached a volume of 96.000 tons.
A large part of that volume comes from the Lucus River region, where there are 550 plantations that cultivate a total of 4.000 hectares, divided, according to the Regional Department of Agriculture, into 3.000 hectares of strawberries, 500 hectares of blueberries and 500 hectares of raspberries. . The region exports berries, both fresh and frozen, to around 30 countries in the European Union, Asia, the Persian Gulf, Australia, North Africa and Latin America. However, 90% of the total exported volume is consumed by only 6 EU countries.
This increase in berry exports is due to the Green Morocco Plan, developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. To increase Morocco's supply in international markets, a B2B mission was recently organized in London for Moroccan berry exporters, with the aim of improving exports to the United Kingdom, assessing the potential and needs of the British market and strengthen relationships with importers and distributors of berries. Thanks to these meetings, Morocco has been able to close several business agreements.
