Morocco could extend its trade calendar for blueberry exports
Morocco, which is linked to European markets from the point of view of economic and logistical integration, has integrated and extended the European production season. In fact, the Kingdom's trade calendar for blueberry exports currently runs from January to May, but in prospect it could extend from October to June.
In parallel, the European blueberry season begins in February with the productions of Huelva (southern Spain); between June and July blueberries from Portugal, northern Italy, Romania and Serbia are added, followed by products from Poland, other countries on the European continent (mainly Germany and the Netherlands) and Ukraine.
However, despite the plurality of exporting countries of this agricultural product, which also shows the beginnings of fierce competition, the truth is that Morocco, Spain and Poland continue to be the reference European suppliers, while the Netherlands and Germany mainly serve national markets. In the UK, given high domestic consumption, blueberry production is growing rapidly in various regions of England and Scotland.
Regarding the consumption of European blueberries, in the period between 2016-2018 it increased by 23%, reaching an average consumption of 250 g per inhabitant. Expert projections on berries (red fruits) have recently set the expected global consumption of blueberries in the next 2 years at 10 million tons, and consumption in the European area at 860 g per capita by 2026.
The last 12 months marked in particular by the pandemic of Covid-19 These estimates have not changed and blueberries continue to experience double-digit growth in the main European markets.
