Morocco: A hard blow for red fruit production in the Gharb and Loukkos region, with a devastating storm

Last Sunday, Morocco was shaken by a violent storm of wind, rain and sand that left indelible marks on the production of red fruits in the north of the country. We warn about these extremely unfavorable weather conditions as soon as Maroc Météo alerted him. The consequences are serious, with a loss of up to 20% of the production of some of these fruits, most of which is destined for export.

La Moroccan Association of Red Fruit Producers (AMPFR) and Moroccan Association of Red Fruit Packers-Exporters (AMCEFR) jointly published, on Wednesday, a press release in which they reveal the extent of the damage caused by the latest storm that hit Morocco. Unfortunately, the 9.000 hectares of land cultivated with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries in the Gharb-Loukkos region were greatly affected.

The violent winds, which reached up to 110 kilometers per hour, tore off the protective plastics from the tunnels and greenhouses dedicated to the cultivation of these precious fruits. The consequences for farmers in the region are disastrous. The metal tunnels suffered considerable damage, with deterioration and deformation reaching 15% of the structures. Additionally, many plants were uprooted, causing an estimated loss of almost 20% of raspberry production.

The situation also worsened due to the power outage that affected the Larache region for almost two days. This caused the cessation of irrigation in many plots and the disconnection of freezing and export units, causing damage to stocks.
