Market in North America for cranberry

The US blueberry season could be "too short" this year. Cort Brazelton, International Business Development Manager for Fall Creek Farm & Nursery commented that some West Coast farms had started harvesting the fruit up to four weeks earlier than usual.

"In Oregon we are now collecting late varieties, and what we are harvesting today we usually collect between late August and early September"He said.

"British Columbia [Canada] arrived at the same time as Oregon and Washington, so it was a very hard market because there was a lot of fruit, but now it will be a very short market because all the late varieties are very early".

"There won't be much late fruit from Oregon, Washington, British Columbia in September and October"He said.

Brazelton added that this year, thanks to the good quality of the fruit, the consumption was high, so that the countries of the Southern Hemisphere that can supply good quality fruit during the autumn window in the US and Canada will have great opportunities.

"Looking from the perspective of Argentina, Peru, Mexico, or even northern Chile - anyone who can send fruit to the U.S. and Canada at the end of August, September, October- it's good news for them"Said Brazelton.

"The only region that will have commercial volume in the US and Canada in that period will be Michigan, and will not be large", He said.

The Fall Creek representative said that if the quality is good and the offer reasonable, "I think we will see a very bustling market until the end of December, when Chilean ships start arriving".

Brazelton also pointed out that the highbush cranberry season in Europe is progressing within normal times, with some cases slightly more delayed than normal, so you can expect a supply gap in the US. and Canada this year.
