Promising market for Scottish blueberries

The Scottish blueberry season has just started, about a week later than normal.

Peter Thompson, director of Thomas Thompson, explains that they started harvesting last Thursday, but the Scottish blueberry season peaks in September and October.

«For now, everything is fine. The season is a bit later than normal due to the bad weather conditions of summer«Peter adds.

Thomas Thompson grows 25 hectares of blueberries in tunnels, as well as cherries, gooseberries and aronia berries.

«Blueberry bushes take a long time to enter production. Some of our recent plantations are entering production this season, so this year we will have an increase in volumes. However, the individual productivity will remain more or less the same as last season«says Peter.

The market has been dominated by Polish blueberries in recent weeks, but now they are ending, so the market looks promising for national blueberries.

«Consumers often prefer local berries to imported berries. The Polish blueberries come out of cold rooms, which considerably diminishes the quality with respect to the Scottish berries, freshly harvested. Truly, the quality can not be compared«.

All the blueberries of the company are destined to the fresh market, directly to the retail sale.
