Mexico produced 83.721 tons of berries in 2016
During the 2016 in Baja California, specifically in the coastal area of the State, 83 thousand 721 tons of Berries (blueberry, raspberry, strawberry and blackberry) were produced with the harvest of 2 thousand 576 hectares, informed the Delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) in the State, Ing. Guillermo Aldrete Haas.
The federal official said that the highest production was obtained with the cultivation of the strawberry. The production obtained was 71 thousand 241 tons, with the harvest of 1 thousand 823 hectares.
The highest production of this strawberry (68 thousand 971 tons) was obtained in agricultural land cultivated in open-pit mode. The planting of organic exceeded the 320 tons; the harvest in shaded mesh structures produced 1 thousand 518 tons and those made through greenhouses, produced a production of 432 tons of this delicious fruit.
He highlighted that Blueberries occupy the second place, obtaining a production of 1 thousand 892 tons in a harvested area of 140 hectares. In this crop, open-pit sowing also stands out with the harvest of 111 hectares and a production of 1 thousand 642 tons of the fruit. It is followed by the shadow mesh cover with 17 hectares and a production of 115.6 tons.
The delegate clarified that 12 hectares of organic were planted, which yielded a production of 134.40 tons.
The third place, the Raspberries occupy with the production of 9 thousand 965 tons and the harvest of 562 hectares. In the open, 8 thousand 312 tons were produced and 448 hectares were harvested. In contrast, organically 1 thousand 653 tons with the crop of 114 hectares.
Aldrete pointed out that during the past harvest, a production of 622.30 tons of Zarzamora was obtained with the harvest of 51 hectares; most of them, cultivated in the open sky (55 hectares) and the rest in 1 hectare, under shade mesh structures.
In Baja California, there are 40 Producers of Strawberry, 11 Producers of Raspberry, 5 Producers of Cranberry and 3 of Zarzamora; most of them located in the agricultural areas of San Quintín and Colonia Vicente Guerrero, belonging to the municipality of Ensenada.
The 90% of the production obtained last year was destined to international markets, mainly from the United States. While the complement 10% was destined to supply the demand of the regional and national market, mainly.
Finally, the Delegate of SAGARPA, assured that the Federal Government headed by the president, Enrique Peña Nieto and the head of the SAGARPA, José Calzada Rovirosa, will continue working in a coordinated manner with the producers of berries of the coastal zone, to achieve the development and consolidation of this important agricultural sub-sector.
