Minister of Agriculture of Chile will participate in the first meeting of the blueberry industry

The XVIII International Seminar of Blueberries Consulting will be the occasion to discuss the future of Chilean fruit growing and public or state support for the entire agro-export industry, among other topics.

The new Minister of Agriculture of Chile, Esteban Valenzuela Van Treek, assumes his functions at the head of the country's agricultural sector on March 11 and will almost immediately be present at the first meeting of the year for the Chilean blueberry industry, within the framework of the XVIII International Blueberry Seminar to be held at the Monticello Conference Center on Thursday, April 7.

Plans

The presence of Minister Valenzuela, in addition to signifying great support for the Chilean blueberry industry, and for the fruit and vegetable industry in general, aims to hold a talk in which the main plans and objectives for Chilean agriculture will be outlined and will clearly be the opportunity to talk about the future of Chilean fruit growing and public or state support for the entire agro-export industry, among other topics.

Reception

The minister's arrival in the agricultural sector has been well received by the trade union organizations that lead the sector. "Fedefruta makes itself available to Minister Valenzuela to promote associativity and the inclusion of all participants in the agricultural chain, from peasant family farming to other actors", declared its president Jorge Valenzuela, arguing that "the The rural world faces many difficulties, and the ecosystem of the countryside works in a very collaborative way. And in this task, the next minister and his team will have full support ”.

Challenges

However, there are other voices that demand bolder or more effective measures to promote Chilean agricultural activity and ask to modify the institutionality of the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations (Subrei) of the Chilean Foreign Ministry, so that the issues of agriculture and food are valued and worked at the highest international level, for the contribution that agriculture and the food industry make to the economy.

“Chile is one of the few OECD countries that still does not have a specialized institutional framework to deal with these issues in negotiations and international organizations. In short, the Subrei should create a strong General Directorate of Agricultural, Food and Natural Resources Affairs, responsible for dealing with issues of access to markets, health, regulation and sustainable development”, some sector analysts demand.

opportunity to chat

They also draw attention to the loss of the status of "Sanitary Island" that the country had a few years ago, because indeed at present fruit fly events and the entry of new pests occur with some frequency, such as Lobesia botrana, Drosophila suzukii and others that require enormous resources to keep them under control and that seriously affect the export possibilities of the fruit.

If we add to this the general concern about water management, in a context of a long drought in the country and a notable lack of the resource for agricultural activity, the scenario is complex, so it will be very interesting to know the scope of his intervention at the blueberry industry meeting to be held on April 7 in Monticello, on the occasion of the XNUMXth International Blueberries Consulting Seminar.
