Minister Walker closes agreements with China in favor of exports

With the objective of strengthening sanitary diplomacy and deepen bilateral agricultural and technological cooperation, the Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker, and the Chinese Minister of Customs. Neither Yuefeng, signed several agreements in Beijing, within the framework of Chile Week 2018.

Specifically, the protocol for the export of dates from China to Chile was signed, the protocols for the export of fresh fruit from Chile to China were updated by means of air shipping with transshipment in a third country, and documentation was delivered on the next product of interest: citrus.

In this regard, Minister Walker appreciated the progress made with the Chinese authorities, because it will mean a tremendous opportunity for Chile to strengthen the commercial relationship with the Asian giant thanks to the quality of the products produced by hundreds of farmers in the country. “This is just beginning. We still have to penetrate the entire internal market of China, we are only now in some cities on the coast. The purchasing power of China has increased a lot and they want to consume Chilean fruit (...) Fruit consumers prefer to eat a Chilean apple than Chinese, because it gives them more security. That has taken us 50 years to achieve and we have to maintain it and that is a tremendous responsibility for what is to come”.

During the last seven years the sanitary opening has been obtained in China for products such as blueberries, pork meats and by-products, dehydrated plums, walnuts with and without shells, avocados, bovine hides, alpacas and live bovines and nectarines . Soon the sanitary opening that allows to start the export of pears is also expected.

Chile-China business

During the morning, Minister Walker participated in the IX Chile-China Binational Business Council. An event aimed at the business community and economic authorities of both countries, in which projections of the Chinese and Chilean economy were analyzed, as well as business and investment opportunities.

In the first plenary session, the authority made a presentation, before more than 200 attendees, on business opportunities in the agricultural sector. "Cooperation in agribusiness between China and Chile" was the title of Minister Walker's presentation, with which he described the situation of Chilean agriculture as an opportunity for investment and mutual cooperation.

"Exports from Chile to China of forestry and agricultural products have grown by 57% in this January-September 2018 season, compared to 2017. Chile has its comparative advantages, both in its climates, market openings, stability, and macroeconomics, which make it an opportunity to invest," he explained. Likewise, along the same lines, he stressed that there is plenty of room to continue growing. “This depends only on us. We have to do things right. We have to differentiate ourselves by quality, condition, safety and flavor”

Promotion of the sector

Until the house of a family in Beijing Minister Walker arrived to deliver a symbolic gift. These were products from the forestry and agricultural sector that traveled from Chile to be promoted in the framework of Chile Week that takes place in China between the 1 and 6 in November. On the occasion, special attention was given to Chilean cherries, a fruit highly valued in the Asian country, because it symbolizes good luck for its inhabitant. It should be noted that the fourth version of this promotional event takes place in the context of the front room of the beginning of the season of this pit.

The objective of this activity was to make national products visible in the portal jd.com - the second largest Ecommerce in China and one of the largest importers of fruit, wine and seafood of Chile - within the framework of Singles day that begins on 1 for January.

During the day, Minister Walker was accompanied by the National Directors of the Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa), María Emilia Undurraga, and the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), Horacio Bórquez, as part of the delegation of the portfolio of agriculture, and also of representatives of the private sector.
