New Zealand: The price of blueberries surprises consumers
Retailers in Queenstown and the New World supermarket in Wellington are selling small boxes of 125 g of blueberries to 15 and 20 dollars, so consumers are surprised by the price and refuse to buy them.
The general manager of the blueberry organic garden Monavale Blueberries, Marco de Groot, announced that his company started last week to sell blueberries in the producers' markets to 8 $ the box and could start selling them in supermarkets next week.
De Groot says that prices have always been higher at the beginning of the season because of the limited supply, but they usually go down at Christmas.
New World spokesperson and owner of Foodstuffs, Antoinette Laird, states that product prices are governed by seasonality and availability. «In the case of blueberries, it is still very early in the season and there is currently little availability of the products. "The good news is that as we move into November and get closer to Christmas, temperatures are trending higher, so consumers can expect a considerable drop in blueberry prices.".
