PASO: Exports of fresh fruits register an increase of 2% in volume in the first quarter of 2021

According to the Fruit Bulletin produced by PASO, during the January-March 2021 period, a total of 1,06 million tons of fruit exports were recorded, for USD 2.908 million FOB, without considering IVV1. With respect to the same period of the previous year, there is an increase of 4% in exported volume, and 7% in value.

Fruit scope

Of this total in value, 88,4% corresponds to fresh fruit, 10,5% to processed fruit (juices, oils, preserves, frozen, dehydrated), and 1,1% to nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, among others).

Fresh fruit reaches sales of 899 thousand tons, equivalent to USD 2.571 million FOB during the January-March 2021 period. These exports register an increase in volume of 2%, and in value of 6% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Fruit exports

The main species exported in the analysis period in this group were cherry, which registers exports of 265.700 tons, equivalent to USD 1.357 million FOB, registering an increase of 83% in volume and 42% in value, compared to the same period last year, mostly destined for China (concentrating 93% of the total value of cherry shipments).

It is followed in importance by blueberries, with 94.300 tons equivalent to USD 466,4 million FOB, registering an increase in shipments of 13% in volume and 12% in value, compared to the same period of the previous year, and where the main buyers are the United States, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom (concentrating 48%, 21% and 11 % respectively of the total value of blueberry shipments).

In third place, there is table grapes, registering 257.200 tons equivalent to USD 402,3 million FOB, registering a decrease of 21% in volume and 33% in value in relation to the same period of the previous year, and with shipments mainly to the United States. .UU. (71%).

These three species concentrate 87% of the total value of fresh fruit exported in the period analyzed.

Processed Fruits

Processed fruits reached sales of 150.965 tons equivalent to USD 304,1 million FOB during the period January-March 2021, which represents an increase in exports of 14% in volume and 11% in value, compared to the same period of the previous year.

In order of importance by sales, the category with the highest representation in value in the period of analysis is frozen (44%), then canned (18,1%), followed by juices (17,9%), and dehydrated (17%) ), and finally there are the oils (3%). Compared to the same period of the previous year, these 5 processes show increases in all their sales. In each category, the following stand out for their higher sales:

Frozen: strawberries and blueberries, with sales of USD 50 million and USD 33 million FOB respectively, with shipments mainly to the US, China and Australia.

Canned foods: peaches and apples, reaching sales of USD 15,5 million and USD 14 million FOB respectively, sent preferably to Mexico and the United States.

Juices: apple and grape, with sales of USD 22 million and USD 15,5 million FOB respectively. The main buyers are the US and Japan.

Dehydrated: plums and raisins, with sales of USD 23,5 million and 18 million FOB respectively. There are several countries that buy these products, highlighting Mexico, Russia and Italy in the first case, and the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Russia in the second case.

Oil: olive, with sales of USD 3,9 million, and with strong shipments to Brazil (82%).
