Netherlands: "Blueberry prices have been absurdly high"

Lhe situation in the blueberry market has stabilized a little. A few weeks ago, prices were sky-high, but now they have been cut in half. «This is mainly due to the shortage we have had and the increase in volumes now on the market. There are other factors that have influenced the price, such as the holiday period in several European countries. Furthermore, if consumption decreases in America, we will notice it immediately," explains Fred Douven, who offers us a vision of the situation of the world blueberry market. «Weather conditions are also a very important factor. “Every year is a surprise.”

Absurdly high prices

Fred Douven is the director of ABB Trading, an internationally oriented company that supplies blueberries and asparagus all year round. In his opinion, the market is quite calm at the moment. «In the 41 and 42 weeks, the prices were absurdly high, 28 euros for 1,5 kilos. Now, they have descended to a few 15 euros«. It is important that prices are not too high, according to Fred. «If in the supermarkets 125 grams are offered to 4 euros, few will buy them, which is a logical consequence. No doubt that makes us lose the purchase on impulse, although those who consume blueberries regularly will buy them anyway«.

Chilean blueberries will arrive soon

Blueberries come from numerous countries, such as Argentina, Peru and South Africa. «Argentine blueberries have been a bit disappointing in terms of quality, Peruvian blueberries have been much better. The volumes of Argentina are decreasing little by little, because the majority of producers have stopped harvesting. The first season in South Africa is also coming to an end. Peru will sign an agreement with China in November, so there will be less supply from this source. I think the volumes will be good and I do not expect extremely high prices for now. In a few weeks, the Chilean blueberries will start arriving«.
