Peru: AGAP demands urgent measures to reactivate the agricultural sector and the Peruvian economy
In a statement dated October 22, the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP) maintains that the "only way out of the recession is by ensuring legal stability, private investment and increasing competitiveness."
Recession concerns
The union organization, which brings together producing, processing, marketing, agro-exporting companies and unions in the Peruvian agricultural sector, expresses its concern about “the recent recognition by the government that the Peruvian economy is in recession; as well as the lack of action to get out of the economic and social crisis that all Peruvians are facing and particularly the agricultural sector", so in the statement, AGAP states the following:
- The serious situation that the country is going through is a consequence of the political, economic and social instability, corruption, populism and public inefficiency, which we have experienced for many years and which, currently, It is up to the government and the Congress of the Republic to correct this situation and lead the destinies of our country with a clear roadmap for economic reactivation and with a high sense of urgency, responsibility and efficiency.
- The government's lack of action to reactivate the economy is leading the country to a very delicate situation due to the level of multidimensional poverty that is increasingly exacerbated by growing unemployment and high informality in all productive sectors, putting the integrity of our population and our country at risk.
- The situation that the agricultural sector is going through is critical, which from AGAP we have been warning for many months, in addition to delivering proposals to the government for the implementation of an economic reactivation plan for the agricultural, agro-export and agro-industrial sector that will contribute significantly to preserving employment, sustaining production and giving sustainability to investments in the entire agricultural production chain.
- It is urgent that the Executive Branch requests powers from the Congress of the Republic for economic reactivation, which must be approved urgently.
- The country and the agricultural sector do not need populist measures or inaction. We need to promote private investment to generate formal employment and a promoting agricultural regulatory framework with legal stability that improves the competitiveness of producers and companies to once again attract investments to the formal agricultural sector.
They also warned of El Niño
This statement, expressing AGAP's concern regarding the delicate situation of Peru's agriculture and economy, is added to the claim that they expressed last August regarding the government's insufficient spending to prevent the effects of the El Niño phenomenon, a claim that was not heard and the consequences are currently being suffered in the Peruvian agro-export industry.
“We urge the authorities of the three levels of Government to urgently carry out the works that will counteract the effects of the El Niño phenomenon,” they said in August and added: “The lack of contingency plans, capacities, inefficiency and corruption, They have been affecting the execution of various irrigation infrastructure projects, drainage, protection of river beds, streams, bridges, roads, etc. necessary to respond to a possible emergency which puts the activity of the agricultural sector at risk.”
Finally, the union body chaired by Gabriel Amaro Alzamora, urges the government of President Dina Boluarte and the Congress of the Republic to establish extraordinary and urgent measures to reactivate the agricultural sector and the Peruvian economy and return to the path of economic growth with well-being for all Peruvians.
