Peru: Agroexports of fruits and vegetables added USD 2.154 million in the 2015
The Association of Agricultural Producers' Associations of Peru (AGAP) reported that the agroexports of fresh fruits and vegetables added USD 2.154 million in 2015, reflecting a growth of 13% last year, after denoting in December a greater dynamism than in previous months.
This increase is significant, since it is the first time that it has overcome the 2,100 barrier of millions of dollars, although it should be specified that it is half of what was achieved as growth the previous year, due to the difficulty of external markets, the union said.
«The good result suggests the possibility of continuing with sustained growth, providing new job opportunities in our country and creating the bases for highly relevant rural economic and social development, under stable rules, which allow greater and diversified investments in the agriculture, which are so needed," they explained from the union.
The star products of the 2015 were the Red Globe grape, to which new varieties of seedless grapes were added, generating exports totaling USD 695 million, despite the fact that international prices have not yet been fully recovered.
Next, for a good performance, the fresh asparagus with USD 417 million, the Hass avocado with USD 304 million, the mangoes with USD194 million and the citrus fruit, with USD 122 million.
As anticipated, the products that showed a remarkable growth in the 2015 were the blueberries, with an expansion of 223% and reaching shipments for USD 97 million, the pomegranate with USD 32 million (26%) and the granadilla with USD 4 million ( 126%).
The United States and the European Union continue to be the first destinations for Peruvian agroexports, with 42% and 40% respectively of the total exported in the 2015, markets that therefore can not be neglected. Regarding Latin America, Chile stands out with a growth of 69% and Ecuador with an 76%.
Peruvian Presence at Fruit Logistica
Promperú and AGAP and their five associated guilds Procitrus, Prohass, Provid, APEM and IPEH, accompanied by close by 60 Peruvian agro-export producers, are presented with a modernized pavilion of more than 50 square meters in the international fair specializing in fruit and vegetables of greater world renown, the Fruit Logistica, which is celebrated from the 3 to the 5 in February in Berlin, Germany.
It is expected the participation of many importers, not only from Germany but throughout Europe, remembering that the main buyers of Peru are the Netherlands with USD 437 million, where fruit destined for Western Europe, the United Kingdom (USD 199 million and that this year grew in 18%) and Spain (USD 97 million).
Challenges
Concerning the challenges of agro exports for the 2016, AGAP mentioned the urgency of eradicating the fruit fly, attending with great attention the impacts of the El Niño Phenomenon, as well as the reinforcement of the National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa) .
In this sense, it seeks to improve phytosanitary access to markets such as the opening of the US market for pomegranate, blueberries and grapes in Japan and blueberries and pomegranates in China and avocados and citrus in Korea, among others; and the implementation of a strong program to promote exports in key markets hand in hand with State authorities.
