Peru: They seek to obtain Peruvian varieties of blueberries through their domestication
Sierra y Selva Exportadora said that native berries are currently under study to determine a new Peruvian blueberry variety that contains three times more antioxidants than conventional berries.
Peruvian varieties of blueberries can be obtained through their domestication through applications of biotechnological techniques and sustained work, he says.
Sierra y Selva Exportadora is working on a project with the National Agrarian University La Molina, called "Domestication of Native Berries of Cajamarca, related to Bilberry, through the use of biotechnological tools".
The coordinator of the project, Antonietta Gutiérrez, indicated that native berries have enormous potential both in the national and international markets.
Native Berrie Pushgay
He mentioned that only in the Cajamarca region there is the Pushgay, a native berrie that grows naturally in that area and that the study seeks to adapt it to different regions of the country and domesticate it in order to find a new variety based on this berrie of Peruvian blueberry.
He explained that samples have already been made that reveal that the Pushgay contains antioxidants up to three times more than the blueberries that are currently marketed in the market (Biloxi variety).
Gutierrez said that is why it is also considered a very important source for medicine because its fruit helps to counteract cancer and diseases of the urinary tract and related to them.
"The wildness of these wild species favor that their adaptation to the climatic conditions of the territory is greater and can reach a balance, so that, for example, diseases that attack blueberries do not attack the Pushgay, it is one more plant Rustic, good producer and also can achieve high prices in the global market for being an organic-ecological product"He said.
He said that, although the ongoing research is long-term, the proposed work and the support of the National Program Peru Berries de Sierra and Selva Exportadora as strategic partner of the project, due to the fact that in the last five years promoted the cultivation of blueberries by entering the market.
Origin in Cajamarca
Sierra y Selva Exportadora, an entity of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, indicated that the university chose Cajamarca to start this project because it is the place where the entity - then Sierra Exportadora - began plans and business projects for Berries within the framework of the Peru Berries National Program.
With the presentation and socialization of the project, its proponents seek that regional, local governments, private sector and universities join this effort with different modalities.
For example, the students of the universities of Cajamarca will be able to guide their research and thesis topics to work with native berries.
"During this year and the 2018 important collections will be made and clonal banks of the wild blueberry species that Cajamarca has will be established, to then carry out the corresponding genetic studies"Gutiérrez explained
