Peru: 2019 hopes to consolidate fruit fly eradication in the south

The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Gustavo Mostajo, said today that in the current year it is expected to consolidate the eradication of the Fruit Fly in the producing areas of the south of the country, and thus continue the advance of agro-exports.

"This 2019 is expected to consolidate the eradication of the Fruit Fly in the agricultural producing areas of the south of the country, Moquegua and Tacna are already free", he declared to the Agencia Andina.
He said that when the Fruit Fly control project was started, an annual loss of about 100 million dollars was estimated for the presence of this pest.

"This has been reversed and today the south of the country has practically a 100% healthy production”, he stressed.
"Today we managed to open foreign markets thanks to the work of the National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa) and this has to be maintained"He added.
This was stated today after making an inspection visit to the Senasa control post located at kilometer 104 of the Panamericana Sur, in Asia, in order to supervise the work of passenger control, which has been reinforced before the arrival of thousands of tourists for the Dakar Rally.
"The Minagri through the Senasa has control posts to protect the areas which have controlled and eradicated the Fruit Fly, part of the route of the Dakar Rally just commits these areas from the south of Lima to Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna"He explained.
He said that at this moment there is a protected agricultural area of the Fruit Fly around 385,000 hectares in the south of the country, where agro-export products such as grapes, citrus, and even avocado are grown.
"It is important to prevent the entry of the pest through non-certified products to the protected areas because the damage would be enormous, the country has cost a lot of money, control the plague, eradicate it and this also guarantees a safe export," he explained.
He also stressed that thanks to these control actions, the Government's goal of reaching the 7,000 millions of dollars in agricultural exports has been achieved,
"The goal has been met we have reached the 7,030 million and is the product of this effort to make our products go healthy towards the international market”, he stressed.

Likewise, it projected that in a period of five years all the coast and mountain range of the country should be free of the plague of the Fruit Fly thanks to actions of the National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa) in Phase II of the Development Program of agricultural health and agro-food safety.
"The Senasa has just signed an agreement to implement the new eradication project that extends to the entire northern area and in five years we must eradicate the plague throughout the coast and mountains of Peru"He said.
For his part, the director of Senasa, Pedro Molina, said that the "quarantine" cord is made up of 25 control posts and the one located at the height of Asia is one of the most important for the entrance to the southern part of the country.
"We have been able to find fruit with larvae of the fruit fly, for this reason the call to the public to advise that they do not bring fruit or ask for respective authorizations to introduce the product, because the work that has been carried out in the fruit areas goes through the soils, we want to strengthen and improve the quality of life of our small producers ", He said.
