Peru: In the first half of the year northern agricultural exports grew 1.3%

The agricultural exports of the Northern Region Macro showed a growth of 1.3% during the first semester of the year when adding US $ 678.7 million, according to a report of the Business Research Center (CIE) of Perucámaras.

This sector was the second with greater weight within the export structure of this part of the country (24.4%). In the non-traditional shipments of Lambayeque, La Libertad and Piura, the agricultural sector registered the highest participation.

The main exported products were mangoes that reached US $ 142 million (-17,1%); the avocados, US $ 117.5 million (29,4%); and the asparagus, US $ 90 million (-5%). It should be noted the increase in 174,9% of blueberry shipments, registering an export value of US $ 19.6 million.

However, shipments from the fishing sector were reduced by 37.1% (US $ 248.5 million), mainly due to the decrease in seafood shipments (-54.9%), products that have the greatest weight in exported value. This sector was the most important among the non-traditional shipments of Tumbes and Piura.

On the other hand, total exports of non-traditional products reached US $ 1.136.1 million, which represented a fall of 11.7% in relation to the same period last year. These products explained the 40.9% of the total dispatched by this macro region.

Traditional sector

Shipments of traditional products totaled US $ 1.641.2 million, registering a decrease of 13.8%. The traditional sector concentrated 59.1% of the total value exported in this part of the country.

This lower advance was mainly due to the result achieved by the mining sector that exhibited a fall of 15.7%, and whose exports of crude gold, the main export product, decreased 16.2%. Shipments of mining products had a participation of 48.6% in the export structure of this part of the country.

Total exports

According to the report of the CIE of Perucámaras, total exports (traditional and non-traditional) of the Northern Macro Region amounted to US $ 2.777.3 million between January and June of this year, registering a fall of 12.9% with respect to the same period of the 2015 .

The main destination market for this macro region was Switzerland (with a share of 26,7% of the total exported), followed by the United States (18,9%), Canada (8,9%) and the Netherlands (6,6%). These four countries together accounted for 61% of total shipments in this part of the country.

Of the five regions that make up this macro region, La Libertad and Piura have the largest share in total exports with 39.6% and 29.4%, respectively. They are followed by Cajamarca (23.6%), Lambayeque (5.3%) and Tumbes (2.1%).

Freedom 

In the first half of this year, exports from La Libertad reached US $ 1.099.3 million, equivalent to a reduction of 8.9% in relation to the same period of 2015.

Shipments from the traditional sector, which totaled US $ 766 million and were responsible for 69.7% of the total dispatched by this region, decreased 14.4%.

Mining exports, which meant the 66.4%, were reduced by 14.9%, as a result of the drop in shipments of crude gold (-14.4%), the main export product and whose target market was Switzerland.

The shipments of the traditional fishing sector, which had a share of 1.8%, registered a decrease of 27.7%, due to the reduction of exports of fishmeal (32.1%), whose main market was Canada.

Meanwhile, shipments of non-traditional products, which accounted for 30.3% of exports from this region, grew by 6.9% when adding US $ 333.3 million.

Agricultural exports, the main non-traditional sector, increased by 12.1%, driven by higher shipments of avocado (82.6%) and blueberries (180.2%), despite the drop in shipments of asparagus (-4%). Its main markets were the United States, the Netherlands and Spain.

Piura 

The Piura region exported US $ 816.8 million, which meant a fall of 17.4% with respect to the same period of the previous year.

Shipments of non-traditional products, which accounted for 75.3% of total exports (US $ 614.8 million), decreased by 18.7%.

Agricultural exports, which represented 29.5%, were reduced by 1.9%, due to the decrease in shipments of mangoes (-17.7%) and lemons (-23.4%), despite the increase in shipments of bananas (13.3%). Its main destinations were the United States and the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, shipments from the non-traditional fishing sector fell 42.6%, as a consequence of the decrease in seafood shipments (-54.7%).

Likewise, exports of traditional products, which represented 24.7% (US $ 202 million), were reduced by 13.1%, due to the negative result achieved by the oil and derivatives sector (-34.9), whose products were mainly directed to Panama and U.S. However, seafood exports grew by 101.2%, driven by higher shipments of fish oil and fishmeal.

Cajamarca

Between January and June of this year, Cajamarca reached US $ 655 million in shipments abroad; 14% less than what was achieved in a similar period of the 2015.

The exports of the traditional sector, which concentrated the 99.4% of the total sent by this region (US $ 651.2 million), fell 13.5%. The mining shipments decreased 16.7%, due to the fact that crude gold and copper ores, the main export products, registered decreases of 18.5% and 7.7%, respectively. Its main markets were Switzerland and the United States, respectively.

Meanwhile, shipments of non-traditional products were reduced by 55.9%, adding US $ 3.9 million. This sector only has a share of 0.6% in the exportable structure of this region.

Agricultural exports, the main non-traditional sector, grew 144.9%. The most exported product was cocoa, which registered an increase of 243.8% (US $ 3.8 million), and its main buyers were the Netherlands and Belgium.

Lambayeque 

Shipments abroad from Lambayeque totaled US $ 148.2 million; 13.2% less than registered between January and June of last year.

Non-traditional exports, which have a participation of 85.1% in this region (US $ 126.1 million), showed a fall of 14.5%, due to the lower advance of the agricultural sector (-15.2%).

Shipments of avocados, mangoes and artichokes were reduced by 43.8%, 28.9% and 10.3%, respectively. However, passion fruit shipments increased 19.9%. Its main markets were the United States and the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, their traditional shipments, which accounted for 14.9% (US $ 22 million), decreased 4.7%, as a result of the negative performance of the agricultural sector (-9.9%). Coffee, the main export product, registered a fall of -9.9% and had Germany as the main buyer.

Tumbes 

The offices of Tumbes added US $ 57.9 million in the first semester of this year, that is, 7.8% less with respect to similar period of the 2015.

The non-traditional sector, responsible for the total exported by this region, recorded a decrease of 7.8%. Shipments of fishery products, which had a share of 97.2%, decreased 7%.

This lower advance was due to the fall in exports of shellfish (-69.4%) and shells (-77.9%), despite the increase in shrimp (0.8%) and fish (19.9%) shipments. Its main markets of destination were the United States, Spain and France.

Meanwhile, agricultural exports were reduced by 37.4%, mainly due to the decrease in banana shipments (-37%).

In the analysis period, Tumbes did not register shipments of traditional products.
