Peru: Cranberry exports will triple this year

Peruvian exports of blueberries could reach 10 million kilos this year, which would represent an increase of 185.7% compared to the close to 3.5 million kilos dispatched the previous year.

This was stated by the general manager of TALSA, Ulises Quevedo, who stressed that the 50% of total exports of blueberries would correspond to their represented.

Although he pointed out that although this year is atypical due to the presence of the El Niño phenomenon, which makes it difficult to predict the production of crops, he showed his confidence that Peru could export the 10 million kilos of blueberries.

Likewise, he indicated that the main destination market for Peruvian blueberries is the United States, where approximately 70% of our total shipments are shipped. He also said that the 15% is destined for Europe and the remaining 15% for Hong Kong.

Negotiation with China

On the other hand, Ulises Quevedo stressed that starting this year will begin to negotiate with China the entry of blueberries.

"There is no date of entry, but as of September of this year the National Service of Agrarian Health (Senasa) will negotiate the phytosanitary protocol with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) of China. For the experience of other products, this could take from one to four years depending on the difficulties encountered along the way"He commented.

The general manager of TALSA said that the Asian giant is awakening to the consumption of blueberries, product that worldwide has shown its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties so it is considered a "super product".

He indicated that although the current consumption of blueberries in China is still small compared to Europe or the United States, it is expected that in 10 years this country will become the second consumer of blueberries in the world.

Another new market that Peru is looking to send its blueberries is Brazil. "The blueberry is a product that Peru has not exported for more than three years, which is why we are still building and penetrating the markets of the United States and Europe."He concluded.
