Peru: Fruit exports grow 11% between January and August

El Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) of Peru reported that fruit exports exceeded USD 2,200 million FOB (55% of non-traditional agricultural exports) during the January-August period, a figure that represented an increase of 11% compared to the same period 2019

Likewise, of what was exported in the first eight months of the year, traditional agricultural exports represented 7% of the total, while non-traditional exports the remaining 93%.

In the balance of the January-August period of this year, total agro-exports registered a value of USD 4,336 million. It should be noted that the agricultural exports registered in the month of August, the FOB value reached an important jump, obtaining a growth rate of 14% compared to the same month of the previous year.

On the other hand, the behavior of agro-exports in August was positive. Agricultural exports totaled USD 691 million in FOB value, which meant a growth rate of 14% compared to the USD 604 million registered in the same month of the previous year, with the growth in sales recorded by the placements of fruits, especially fresh blueberries and avocados.

Of the value exported during August 2020 (USD 691 million), traditional agro-exports represented 14% of the total exported, while non-traditional exports the remaining 86%.

For example, traditional agricultural exports during August reached USD 98 million, a figure that represented an increase of 8.4% compared to what was registered in the same month of 2019.

Within this group of products, unroasted coffee exports (US $ 86 million) stand out, which registered a growth of 4.5% and cane sugars (US $ 9 million), whose value increased by 92%. Both products accounted for 97% of traditional agro-exports.

For their part, non-traditional agro-exports during August totaled USD 594 million, a figure 16% higher than that observed in the same month of 2019. The main products of the non-traditional agro-export ranking in the analyzed month were: fresh blueberries (19% participation) , fresh avocados (17%), other citrus fruits (10%), fresh asparagus (7.3%), cocoa beans (3.2%), other fruits and other uncooked fruits (2.4%), bananas including “cavendish” type bananas fresh valery ”(2.1%), preparations used to feed animals (1.8%), onions and shallots, fresh (1.7%) and quinoa (1.6%).

These 10 products together account for 67% of the total non-traditional products exported.

Non-traditional products that registered positive growth in that month were: fresh blueberries that reached USD 111 million (+ 44%), fresh avocados US $ 103 million (+ 40%), the other citrus fruits USD 62 million (+ 62%), other fruits and uncooked fruits USD 14 million (+ 49%), bananas including bananas type "cavendish valery" fresh USD 12 million (+ 23%), onions and shallots, fresh USD 10 million (+ 29%), among others.

During August, Peruvian agro-exports reached 104 countries, being the United States, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Belgium, the 10 main destination countries for our products from the field (this group of countries concentrated 80% of the FOB value exported in August.
