Peru: Imminent entry of Peruvian blueberries in Canada

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported today that the entry of fresh Peruvian blueberries to the Canadian market will be completed shortly after the necessary procedures are completed before the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA, for its acronym in English ).

The Minister of Mincetur, Magali Silva, said that it is only necessary that the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA), in coordination with the Commercial Office of Peru in Toronto (Ocex Toronto), complete the necessary procedures before the CFIA.

Currently, the authorities of Canada are implementing, as a final process, the protocols in the different areas of the Canadian customs systems to then start fresh blueberry exports from Peru. Until before this decision, the entry of exotic fruit to that market was not allowed.

Second consumer country

Silva welcomed the opening of a new market for blueberries, especially because Canada is the second consumer country of this fruit in the world, with imports that reached 186 millions of dollars in the 2014.

"Peru produces blueberries during the year, which guarantees the supply for a large market like Canada and it is also an opportunity to expand our non-traditional exports"He said.

Trial period

According to the Ocex Toronto, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will allow the entry of blueberries during a trial period, in which the Canadian importer must request a prior purchase permit before shipping the product from Peru.

After this period, fresh Peruvian blueberries will be able to enter Canada fulfilling the same requirements applied to the other exporting countries.

Canadian importers

Meanwhile, as part of the penetration strategy of Peruvian products to Canada, the Ocex Toronto is preparing a database of Canadian importers in order to disseminate and promote the blueberry offer in our country, which will facilitate the generation of business between Peruvian companies and those of Canada.

The main suppliers of blueberries are the United States, Chile and Argentina, which represent 97 percent of the total imported by Canada.
