Peru: Blueberries were the agricultural export that generated the most value during September

The export value of blueberries increased by 52,6% during September compared to the same month last year, according to the report of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics of Peru. In this way, the blueberry becomes the agricultural product that generated the most value when exported in Peru, followed by coffee, avocados, asparagus and raw cocoa.

The increase in exports of Peruvian blueberries confirms the expectations that the market had regarding production for this season, consolidating itself as the largest exporter of this fruit in the world. The main recipients of Peruvian fruit during September 2021 were the Netherlands and the United States. The large export of blueberries to the latter country influenced the increase in the number of shipments from Peru to the US, which reached 42,3% during the ninth month. Oil, mining products, cotton lollies and asparagus also drove the increase in shipments to the North American country to a lesser extent.

The most competitive period for Peruvian blueberries in the world market traditionally begins in September. However, the increase in production allowed European markets to start receiving berries during the last weeks of august as mentioned by Roberto Latorre from CarSol Europe.

Peru has been the exporting country with the highest growth in the blueberry market, going from exporting less than 50 tons in 2010 to almost 125.000 in 2019 according to data from the US Foreign Agricultural Service
