Peru will be, for the third consecutive year, the first blueberry exporter on the planet

This trend observed by the Peruvian blueberry export industry consolidates the Peruvian leadership and sustains the qualities of the product, maintaining a significant performance as a star in the Peruvian agro-export basket.

As the shipments of Peruvian blueberries to the different markets of the world are added, it is possible to observe the trend that ensures that for the third consecutive season Peru will be the most important exporter of blueberries in the world.

According to the Peruvian news agency, Agraria.pe, Peruvian blueberry shipments reached 112.078 tons at the beginning of October this year, showing an increase of 59% compared to the season prior to the same date, in which they had been exported. 70.399 tons at the beginning of October 2020.

High levels

The Peruvian figures are decisive with respect to its closest competitors in the global blueberry industry and consolidate its privileged position with respect to Chile, which until three years ago was the leader in blueberry exports to the world. If we compare the projection of the Chilean season made by the Chilean Blueberry Committee, which estimates that the export of fresh Chilean blueberries points to a volume of 117.000 tons for the 2021-2022 season, the Peruvian figures rise well above those figures

This improvement in the export performance of blueberries is a consequence of higher agricultural productivity in the Peruvian industry and important regions, such as La Libertad and Lambayeque, have increased their volumes by 35% and 151% respectively, accumulating a joint participation of 77% so far. % of the total blueberries exported by Peru.

The markets

Peruvian shipments of fresh fruit for export currently reach the most important markets in the world, although the United States market remains in the first place of destination, with a 55% share. According to Agraria.pe in this destination, the Peruvian blueberry grew from 34.525 tons to 61.090 tons, and its value was quoted at an average price of USD 6.2 per kilo (FOB). In the case of the European market, excluding the United Kingdom, growth has been 32%, with an average price of USD 6.5 per kilo (FOB). While in China, which represents a market with great potential and syndicated by experts as the main future market, the demand for Peruvian blueberries grew by 86%, reaching a price of USD 7.0 per kilo (FOB).

It should be noted that, thanks to the joint work between the public and private sectors, and especially the work carried out by the National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (Senasa), around 6,5 tons have been allocated to India, a market that has recently been opened for this product.

This trend observed by the Peruvian blueberry export industry consolidates the Peruvian leadership and sustains the qualities of the product, maintaining a significant performance as a star in the Peruvian agro-export basket.
